Staff Reads: Dumbledore for Prez and Other Tales

By

This week we throw politics into the mix (kind of) by asking (tongue-in-cheek) Which literary character would you choose to be president? No one was surprised by Emily’s response! Feel free to let us know your choice on Twitter. #CRPreads

Dumbledore - blog post

The Lorax for prez! His campaign slogan would, of course, be: “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” —Caitlin Eck, publicity manager

OK, so here’s my idea: We set up what seems like a presidential simulator, right? The complex controls handle everything from large-scale policy decisions to day-to-day actions such as proper handshake technique with foreign dignitaries. But, in actuality, the person manipulating the controls is manipulating a lifelike android that we will have installed in the Oval Office and convinced the public is a real person. Then, into this simulator, we place hyper intelligent, ruthlessly pragmatic 10-year-old Ender Wiggin, from Ender’s Game, and we just let him do what he does best: execute practical plans that achieve necessary results by any and all means, no matter the cost. —Geoff George, publicist

Miss Nelson, from Miss Nelson is Missing! Sure, that would mean that when America was behaving badly, Viola Swamp would show up to give us homework and detention and cancel recess, but we’d learn our lesson about appreciating who we have in charge when Miss Nelson returns. —Mary Kravenas, marketing manager

Of course I choose Dumbledore. And his slogan would have to be: “Remember to turn on the light, America.”  —Emily Lewis, editorial and marketing assistant

Our country deserves the self-assured vision of Ignatius J. Reilly: “What we need is a good, strong monarchy with a tasteful and decent king who has some knowledge of theology and geometry, and who makes an occasional cheese dip.” It’s a long slogan, but it gets the point across. —Lindsey Schauer, project editor

Captain Ahab. Slogan: “Make America Great Again!” —Yuval Taylor, senior editor

We need Mary Poppins. “While we adore men individually, we agree that as a group they’re rather stupid.”  (OK, it’s from the movie, but it counts, right?) —Michelle Williams, managing editor
