Anything for a Hit Interview – Paperback Edition

By

When Anything for a Hit came out a year ago it received rave reviews by Vanity Fair and the New York Times and was featured in Rolling Stone, Billboard, and elsewhere. This #MeToo must-read for the music industry is now available in paperback, so we’ve checked in with author Dorothy Carvello for a brief recap on her past year.

Anything for a Hit has been out in the world for a year now. What has your experience been promoting the book?

I have done podcast, newspaper and magazine interviews. It’s been fun. I’m most proud that the book was reviewed by the New York Times Book Review. It’s humbling.

Have you been surprised by any of the reactions to your book?

The outpouring from men who are supportive and love the book really surprised me. Most men hate that women have been getting the shaft in business and have to endure sexual harassment.

Since the book came out, the #MeToo movement has only gained more momentum, and more women are speaking out and naming their accusers. Powerful men who have twisted and abused the system have fallen, and women have been galvanized to tell their stories. How do you think Anything for a Hit fits into the larger picture of this movement?

Yes, I wrote the book before the #MeToo movement. It is the first book to come out in the #MeToo movement. I’m always the first woman in everything I do in my career. The movement is coming slowly to the music business. I’m chipping away using my book as a platform to affect change.

Is there anything you would change about the book or wish you knew before it came out?

No. I’d change nothing.

What do you hope people will take away from reading Anything for a Hit?

I hope women and men start to treat each other with respect in the workplace. There must be zero tolerance for abuse. I hope no other woman has to endure the treatment I went through. Stand up for yourself, and don’t enable others. Don’t be afraid to speak up.
