"Panchyk looks at how maps developed over history, shaped by needs ranging from political to economic to scientific...The activities are interesting enough for science-minded kids, though teachers will need to help students with discussion and follow-up. Though the layout of topics is sometimes strange—treasure maps in between a discussion of political maps and the electoral college—this should catch the eye of those for whom reading a map is like unlocking a puzzle."
