Overview

A caring, crusading priest and his battle for social justice
Revealing the story of a white Catholic priest serving a black Chicago parish who has been criticized as a trouble-making maverick, a renegade cleric, and a publicity hound, this book is a fascinating look at the inner workings of the Catholic Church, the traditions of the black pulpit, and what it takes to change the laws in a major American city. This biography concentrates on Father Pfleger’s work at St. Sabina and covers his efforts to build up the parish, his activism, his work to rejuvenate the community, his battles with church leaders, and his strong relationship with the St. Sabina parishioners. This personal story tells how this dynamic preacher and his church community have created social changes to transform their neighborhood, change the face of a city, and inspire thousands.

Reviews

"Father Michael Pfleger is one of the great prophetic Christian figures in American life and history.  His political activism and social ministry is rooted in a profound love of God and genuine compassion for ‘the least of these’ poor and working people. This book captures his vocation and mission in a convincing and timely manner."  —Cornel West, Princeton University

"In the spirit and tradition of my father, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Father Michael Pfleger has poured his heart and his remarkable energy into fighting for justice and decency and speaking truth to power on behalf of the 'least of these.' Radical Disciple provides a glimpse into the life of one America’s most courageous clergymen and the ways that he has used his God given gifts and talents to advance racial justice, human liberation, and a more nonviolent society." —Bernice A. King, president-elect, Southern Christian Leadership Conference
