Group Publisher

Cynthia Sherry, group publisher for Chicago Review Press and Triumph Books, has been with the  company since 1989. She has held financial management as well as executive editorial positions at Independent Publishers Group, Chicago Review Press and Triumph Books. As publisher for Chicago Review Press, she oversees the editorial, marketing, publicity and book production of about 60 titles a year under five different imprints, including Chicago Review Press, Lawrence Hill Books, Academy Chicago Publishers, Council Oak Books and Parenting Press, and manages a publishing staff of 15.

 

jerry 2Jerome Pohlen
Senior Editor 

Jerome Pohlen has been with Chicago Review Press since 2001. Prior to joining CRP, Jerome was the editorial director for Learning Resources, an educational toy company; taught fourth and seventh grade in the Chicago Public Schools; worked as an engineer and served in the US Peace Corps in Benin, West Africa. He has written 12 award-winning science kits; 23 books for adults and children including Oddball Illinois (and nine other Oddball titles), The Apollo Missions for Kids, Chicago Baby, Albert Einstein and Relativity for Kids and Gay & Lesbian History for Kids; and articles and op-eds for the Los Angeles Times, The Advocate, Stars and Stripes and the Chicago Reader.

Senior Editor 

As Senior Editor, Kara Rota acquires and edits music, film, pop culture and entertainment titles for Chicago Review Press as well as other nonfiction. Previously from 2014 Kara worked at Macmillan, acquiring and editing cookbooks, business books and other nonfiction for multiple Macmillan imprints. Most recently, Kara was a senior editor at St. Martin's Press. A graduate of Sarah Lawrence College, she also served as director of recipe website and Macmillan portfolio company Cookstr.com and host of the Clever Cookstr podcast. Thrilled to be back in her hometown, Kara is a third-generation Evanstonian and her first job (besides babysitting) was at Chicago’s Green City Farmer’s Market.

Managing Editor

Michelle Williams started at Chicago Review Press in 2006 as a project editor. As the managing editor she now oversees the editorial production for CRP’s widely varied list. She enjoys the range of topics she gets to learn about from our titles as well as working with the various departments necessary to the bookmaking process.

Developmental Editor 

Devon Freeny began working for Chicago Review Press as a freelance copyeditor in 2006 and joined the company full-time as an editor later that year. In his two decades in publishing, he has been involved in all aspects of the production process, from acquisitions to developmental editing to layout and design. He graduated with honors in English language and literature from the University of Chicago.

Assistant Project Editor 

Ben Krapohl joined Chicago Review Press in 2019 as an assistant project editor. Previously, he worked as a writing intern with digital news source Nashville Post. And though he hasn’t been working with books long, he’s got quite the résumé when it comes to adoring them. He graduated from Taylor University with a major in professional writing and a minor in creative writing.

Editorial & Subrights Associate

Alex Granato has been with Chicago Review Press since 2017. In addition to supporting the editorial staff of CRP, she assists with contracts and royalty payments for CRP and Triumph Books and coordinates materials and license agreements for all subsidiary rights sales.

Director of Production

Allison Felus has worked at Chicago Review Press in varying capacities since 2002, most recently as production manager. She oversees all aspects of book production, including budgeting, printing and shipping.

Production Manager

Kris Anstrats manages all aspects of print production for Triumph Books. She has been working in book publishing since graduating with an AM in English from the University of Illinois. She enjoys the opportunity to work on many different projects ranging from biographies to coffee table photo books to instant championship commemoratives.

Senior Designer

Jonathan Hahn is a senior designer at Chicago Review Press and Triumph Books. Along with designing covers and interiors, he also directs a stable of freelance designers on additional projects. Some of his most recent work includes the covers for Rainbow Warrior, Elevated, I’ll Show You, Howell’s Storm, Up Jumped the Devil, The Inhabited Island and US of AA.

Senior Designer

Preston Pisellini is an in-house designer for Triumph Books and Chicago Review Press. When not pulling all-nighters to help create instant championship books, he can be found working on covers for the best in sports and entertainment titles. In addition to his design duties, Preston also manages the production of ebooks.

Associate Designer

Sadie Teper joined Chicago Review Press in 2019 after working as a freelance designer. As the associate designer, she works closely with the marketing department, as well as assisting with cover design and book layouts. One of her first design jobs was for a newspaper, and she has maintained her love of print design ever since. Also, she likes cheese.

Director of Marketing

Andrea Baird is the director of marketing for Chicago Review Press and Triumph Books. She has over a decade of experience in book promotion, planning events, executing social media strategy, coordinating advertisements, elevating brand awareness and elevating products and services. Baird received her master’s in publishing from DePaul University. She specializes in film, cooking, LGBTQ+ history and business titles for Chicago Review Press.

Marketing Coordinator

Jen DePoorter graduated from DePaul University with her masters in writing and publishing in 2016. From the time she was a kid, Jen knew she wanted to work in publishing as she could never put a book down. Joining the team as the marketing coordinator in 2018, she has bombarded the office with her love of true crime, feminist literature and Amy Poehler. She specializes in history, politics, true crime, parenting and beer titles.

Marketing Associate

Emily Lewis joined Chicago Review Press as a dedicated marketing intern during summer 2015 and became a marketing and editorial assistant later that year. Previously, she interned in sales and publicity at various publishing houses. She has a BA in English and comparative literary studies with an emphasis in creative writing from Occidental College. Emily specializes in feminist, social justice, children’s, middle grade and young adult titles.

Marketing Associate

Stefani Szenda started with Triumph Books as a publisher assistant in summer of 2017 before joining Triumph Books and Chicago Review Press full time. Previously, she worked for her local library as well as multiple Chicago sports teams. She has a BA in journalism from DePaul University. Stefani specializes in music, sports, sci-fi and horror titles for Chicago Review Press.

Tom Galvin oversees both traditional and nontraditional sales opportunities for Chicago Review Press and Triumph Books. He also manages new business development and revenue growth opportunities.

VP of Marketing & Publicity

Annette Hobbs Magier is the vice president of marketing and publicity at IPG. She began her career in publishing at HarperCollins Children’s Books after completing the NYU Summer Publishing Institute nearly 15 years ago. Since then, she’s held a variety of sales and marketing roles in publishing companies large and small, and assists in assigning and promoting key titles for Chicago Review Press.

Senior Publicist

Leanna Gruhn started out as an intern with Trafalgar Square Publishing in 2014 before merging into the IPG publicity department. She has a hedgehog, Professor Minerva McGonaquill, and she’s the best. Leanna enjoys reading nonfiction and true crime and pushing the feminist agenda.

Senior Publicist

Sam Ofman started with IPG as an intern before catching on full time with Triumph Books. Now, as a member of the IPG publicity department, he maintains a focus on sports and music titles. Sam recently moved to Seattle, WA, where he works remotely and is free to practice his golf swing throughout the day without bothering his colleagues. He likes to believe that the IPG staff in Chicago misses him dearly.

Publicity Associate

Hailey Peterson started as an intern with Trafalgar Square Publishing in 2016 before she was hired as an IPG publicity associate. She received her bachelor’s in journalism, with a minor in English, from Loyola University Chicago. She specializes in general fiction, self-help, lifestyle, social science and film and entertainment titles for IPG.

Publicity Assistant 

After graduating from Dominican University, Natalie Rodriguez worked as an intern with Trafalgar Square Publishing in early 2018. She was hired as an IPG publicity assistant after completing her internship. She likes thrifting, horror movies, true crime podcasts and anything pistachio.
